Pearson 4 Road Trip - 06/06 Springfield, IL

The following is Aunt Carole's "journal":

Was a lazy morning.  Plan on staying here 2 nights.  Delma made coffee and donut run in PJs (of course).  Her and Deb sat out on picnic table; and I joined them.  The workers came to work on the swimming pool.  While we watched, they tried to start the pump, but couldn't.  Guess what, they forgot to put gas in the pump.

While Delma is in the shower, Deb told us she had to get earplugs out last night because 3 chain saws were going off in the room.  She will just have to take off her nose piece (Breathe Right strip), and join us.  We are going site seeing today; lots of things about President Lincoln here.  I have read several items about where to go, especially Lincoln's tomb......where they say you rub his nose for good luck.  But yesterday at Vandalia, Delma rubbed more than his nose!  (See below pictures of Delma's "rubbing"!)

10:36am - leaving motel....going to see things.  All one-way streets.  All special parking; we could be towed at the Visitor Center!  Jean and I decided we didn't want to live in a city.  Guess we really are country girls.

Met man from Salisaw in the hotel parking lot.  Believe he was kinda windy.  Said he had 600 head of cattle, but he is working up here.  What do you think?

Jean and I are in car waiting on girls to get more information.  And all we see walking the streets are men.  Different, huh?  Visited Lincoln's home.  Very interesting; we enjoyed it.  On to KFC for dinner (lunch).  Now to visit Lincoln tomb and museum.

Whoops!  Missed turn going to tomb, so going to New Salem now (New Salem is a 700 acre reconstructed town of Lincoln's childhood.  Lots of log cabins!).  Glad to know not going to tomb because Delma was worried about the "damn" horses going this far (the horses in Lincoln's funeral procession).  Everything turned out good.

I really enjoyed the tour of Lincoln's tomb.  Of course I am a nut because I enjoy looking at different cemetaries.  Back to motel.  Debbie has been busy looking for us more scenic highways for tomorrow.  We want to see the covered bridges in Indiana and then on to Amish country.  We have been having great times and lots of laughing.

The following is more "blogging" from Debbie.

We are having some crazy times.....and it has nothing to do with the sites we've seen (or will see) in Springfield.  As I was getting ready this morning, I had to show Aunt Carole and Mom the new panties Kylee helped me pick out.  Aunt Carole said they sure didn't look very big.  I told her they were pretty good sized....so she had to prove to me there weren't.  She got a pair of her underwear out and we compared....and of course, I had to take a picture.  Needless to say, we got a really big laugh out of that!

We eventually got ready and headed downtown.  Aunt Carole had found information on the Visitor Center, so off we went.  Found a fantasitic parking space under a nice tree since Mom and Aunt Carole were going to stay in the car.  We found out real quick our car would be towed in short order if we didn't get it moved.  Needless to say, we complied quickly.  We still managed to get the information we wanted and were off to Lincoln's home (only home he owned).

It was a wonderful tour and I got several nice pictures.  However, my favorite is the picture the park ranger took of all of us at the end of the tour:

Mother doesn't normally carry her purse around her neck.  As she said "I'm following the Park Ranger's instructions".  We were told to carry our purses in front to avoid hitting walls or anything else.  Mother did just fine!!

After lunch at KFC we headed out to Lincoln's tomb.  Aunt Carole was polite when she said we missed our turn to the tomb.  I just misread the map and took us out to New Salem (about 30 minutes outside of Springfield).  Oh well, that worked out just fine.  Now we don't have to do that tomorrow.

Mom and Aunt Carole were the smart ones and stayed in the snack bar/shop area while Delma and I walked through the "village".  It was pretty interesting to see all of the log cabins.  My favorite was the "public" outhouse (a 4-hole potty house!).

Here is an inside view:

Pretty cool, huh!

From New Salem, we went back into Springfield to visit Lincoln's tomb.  We had no concept of what to expect, but WOW, we were in for a surprise.  It's beautiful!

Mom wasn't interested in the tomb, so Aunt Carole, Delma and I went in.  It's amazing.  We walked into a rotunda shaped room, with a bronze duplicate of the Lincoln memorial statue.  Then walked through marble lined halls to Lincoln's tomb.

Lincoln's wife (Mary Todd) and 3 of their sons are buried in the monument as well.

Then to round out the day, we stopped at Walmart on the way back to the motel.  We needed a few things; like Aunt Carole's favorite meal -- cereal.  Then off to the hotel where Aunt Carole and I did hard labor clipping Delma's little toe!!

A job well done, if I say so myself

Well, we have laid out the plans for tomorrow.  Mom and Aunt Carole will have a quite/lazy morning while Delma and I go visit the Lincoln Library.  Then off on a scenic drive through Illinois to Indiana, where we will see a few of the 31 covered bridges in Parke County, Indiana.  I'm really excited about that.  Then, on to Amish country in Ohio.

That's it for the day.  More to come tomorrow.
